So from the EKG the docs determined that I have an "atrial flutter" and without getting too technical basically means that top and bottom chambers of the heart called the atria and ventrical (remember your Jr High biology!) are not in sync thus causing the heart to not pump properly. Anyways I was booked for an appointment with the Internal Medicine Specialist the next day.
Met with Dr. Westra, who is also a Triathlete, and got the scoop. 2 meds....one to slow down my pulse rate which was resting around 90, and a blood thinner. I have to be on these for about 3 weeks and then the plan is to do a Cardioconversion....which is just like the TV shows and you get the paddles to shock the heart back into regular or sinus rhythm. So 3 weeks of low energy, shortness of breath and just generally feeling like crap....oh yeah Dr. Westra said I could continue to swim/bike/run but wear the HRM and keep out of zone 5. Considering the way I felt and that I could get close to zone 5 going upstairs, my workouts for the next 3 weeks would be sparse!
